steeplechase next year PA Auckland The stake for the Nescafe Great Northern Steeplechase next year will be $150,000, the Auckland Racing Club announced this week. The club’s president, Mr Calvin Ring, also said the stake for the Tanalith Northern Hurdles would be raised to $75,000 next season. The 1984 Nescafe Great Northern Steeplechase was worth $75,000 and this year’s event was originally worth $lOO,OOO, but the stake has been increased to $120,000. The hurdles, last year known as the Tanalith Northern Hurdles, carried stakes of $50,000. The prize was increased to $60,000 this year.
