Miles Franklin award
NZPA-AAP Sydney A Perth man has won the SASOOO Miles Franklin Literary Award. Tim Winton, aged 24, of the Perth suburb of Mount Hawthorn, beat 28 other entrants with his novel, “Shallows,” which is set in a small West Australian coastal village and contrasts today’s attitudes towards the whaling industry with those of last century. It is the second literary award for the young writer, who was joint winner of the 1981 Australian Vogel Award for his first novel, “An Open Swimmer.” The five judges unaminiously chose Winton’s novel as the winning entry and praised the author’s ability to combine effectively past and present events. The award was set up with funds from part of the estate of Miles Franklin, who won wide acclaim for her book, “My Brilliant Career.” It has been administered as a trust since 1957.
In that year, Patrick White won the first Miles Franklin Award for “Voss.”
