The Australian band, The Johnnys (above) ride into town to play at the Gladstone Tavern tomorrow and Saturday evenings. The band have been described as wild rocking cowboys for their western suits and their own particular brand of country and western rock, although the call of the outback might be a better term for their music.
The Johnnys have have released a new single, “My Buzzsaw Baby (Really Cut Me Up),” and a 12-inch EP with the same name, which was produced by Steve Nieve, Elivis Costello’s keyboards player. The titles of the EP give some idea of their music: “Injun Joe,” “Pray To John Wayne,” and a live version of “Move.” The single has “Slip Slap Fishin’” on the B-side.
The gigs by the band have been distinguished by hayfights, baked bean orgies, and bulk beer consumption. Tony Green describes the single as “very good in a sort of leave-your-brain-at-home way — punky country played tunefully and irreverently by a bunch of would-be cowboys.”
Green adds that rumour has it the promoter has been asked to provide 10 hay bales for the two shows — you have been warned. Yeeha!
