Objectors welcome
new meat
council proposal
Moves to establish a meat industry council have been welcomed by a farmers group that 18 months ago mounted a national campaign against centralised control by the Meat Board. The chairman of the Meat Producers’ Action Committee, Mr H. B. Styles, of Timaru, welcomed the statement last Friday by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, that legislation paving the way for a meat industry council would be introduced to Parliament soon.
, “Even better news was the statement of broad guidelines as to the functions of the M.I.C. and its basic role in the develop-
ment of effective marketing
policies for sheepmeats,” said Mr Styles. “Implicit in the statement of policies is the requirement for the meat industry to establish an exchangetype operation to enable competition for product, and the setting of market-re-lated prices to producers,” he said. “These policies will be welcomed by the committee.” The guidelines announced by Mr Moyle included stimulating market-led entrepreneurial activity, minimising intervention in the
activities of marketoriented exporters, and progressively returning meat marketing to the private sector.
