Rain boosts video hire
The present cold snap is proving a blessing not only to farmers but also to video hire shops. Since the wet weather began some shops have doubled the number of videos hired, as more people turn indoors for entertainment.
According to one shop manager, Mr Peter Rhodes, video shops usually experience a quiet time during summer but continuing good weather this autumn had meant almost “drought” conditions in regard to
video hire. “But winter months are always busier, and the cold weather this week has caused business to pick up considerably,” he said. Another shop manager, Mrs Johanna Aldridge, said the six video shops she supervised had all noticed
an improvement in sales this week because of the change in the weather. The owners of the shops were very pleased with the upsurge in business — and the rain. “The long, dry spell has
been very bad for sales, and we were almost praying for rain. We hope the weather stays like this for a while,” Mrs Aldrige said. Many home-appliance shops have also reported brisk sales this week of such goods as heaters, clothes dryers, and stoves. One saleswoman said that many people were also looking to buy television sets and video recorders for home entertainment during the winter. Many inquiries for these had come from seasonal workers in particular.
