AUSTRALIA Trading firm, but down

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets firmed in the final session, with general buying support, but ended the day slightly below Tuesday’s record high, brokers said.

The all ordinaries index fell three points from yesterday’s record high of 898.4 points to 895.4.

The all resources index dropped 5.7 points to 617.3, the all industrials index added 1.1 points to 1250.1, and the gold marker was up 0.1 points to 981.1.

Brokers said the softer sharemarket tone had been expected, in line with a weaker Dow Jones index and steady international bullion prices. The Federal Government’s spending cuts had been virtually ignored by investors, even though they were seen as being a sincere attempt to cut the Budget deficit. They said most stocks came off their day’s low in the final session on buying support highlighted by a shortage of scrip. The national turn-over was 50.0 million shares, against 65.19 million yesterday.

Resource stocks fell early in the day, but rallied late in trading, with BHP ending at 648, down 14c, CSR dropped 7c to 285 and Western Mining fell

6c to 438.
