Admiral favours port calls
NZPA-AAP Perth United States nuclear warships had no logistic reason to visit New Zealand but port calls would improve co-operation between the countries, according to Rear-Admiral John Batzler, commander of the United States Navy carrier battle group, Charlie, which arrived in Western Australia. The eight-ship battle group includes one of the world’s most powerful warships, the 95,000-ton aircraft
carrier U.S.S. Carl Vinson. At a press conference aboard the carrier Admiral Batzler said the New Zealanders were entitled to their opinions and policies on nuclear weapons although he disagreed with their stand because port visits would be important in combined operations. “We would certainly like to go there because we still consider them allies,” he said. “Any visit to countries that we are friendly with can only improve relations”.
