Wives of smokers at risk

NZPA-Reuter San Diego Non-smoking women who inhale smoke from their husband’s cigarettes have a 2% times greater risk of dying from heart disease than do women whose husbands do not smoke, according to a medical study. The study, which began between 1972 and 1974, covered 695 married women.

Dr Cedric Garland, the main author of the study and assistant professor of community medicine at the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine, said that of the 492 wives of present or former smokers, 17 had died of heart disease.

The study, however, also found that the wives of nonsmokers tended to have higher blood pressure than the wives of smokers.
