Last member retires

General Service Hand Alex Mathison, of Christchurch, the last member of the Royal New Zealand Air Force to have served in an air crew during World War 11, has retired from the service. He was trained as an air gunner at Ohakea, and saw active service in Ventura bombers with No. 1 Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron in the Pacific. He was demobilised in September, 1945, with the rank of Flight Sergeant. He worked in the building trade in civilian life until 1966, when

he rejoined the service as a security guard in the Police Flight at Wigram Air Force Base, where he has remained since. In his service with the Air Force, he was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Pacific Star, the 1939-45 War Medal, the New Zealand War Service Medal, and the R.NJZ.A.F. Long Service and Good Conduct Medal for 18 years of exemplary service. His father, Mr Jock Mathison, was the Labour Member of Parliament for Avon for many years.
