Compulsory ID?
NZPA-AAP
Canberra
A proposal for a national system of compulsory identity cards will be sent to a caucus committee, the Federal Australia Labour Party caucus has decided.
The proposal has been put forward by a New South Wales A.L.P. backbencher, Mr David Simmons. Government sources have said caucus meeting resolved that the proposal be considered by the legal and
administrative committee.
They said there was a narrow division within the caucus about the proposal, some members supporting it to reduce tax avoidance and social security fraud while others were opposed mainly on grounds of civil liberties. Mr Simmons said after the meeting that he was pleased that the isssue would be examined seriously.
