Death plot uncovered
The F. 8.1. director, William Webster, said that his agency had foiled a plot by Sikhs to assassinate the Indian Prime Minister, Mr Rajiv Gandhi, during his visit to the United States next month. Five Sikhs had been arrested in New Orleans for alleged involvement in the E’ and two others were g sought, said Mr Webster.
The seven people named
also planned to launch guerrilla activities in India, Mr Webster alleged.
Mr Webster said United States Government agents had successfully penetrated the plot as the Sikhs were in the midst of a training programme, on the use of firearms and explosives.
In New York, meanwhile, the United States Attorney (prosecutor), Raymond Dearie, said he had videotapes of Sikhs discussing
Gandhi’s murder with an undercover agent. They also discussed a plan to create a loss of confidence in the Indian Government by bombing strategic locations such as a nuclear power plant and Government buildings, Mr Dearie said. The Sikhs had told the agent that their cause involved the revolutionary overthrow of the Indian Government, he alleged.
