Nanny service set up

Parents in Christchurch and the South Island who need help at home with their children can now call on a nanny agency for help. The agency, “Jo’s Home Helpers,” had been working in the city for two weeks, said the manager, Miss Jo Broughton. Miss Broughton worked as a nanny in Christchurch before working overseas, and said that there was a “great need” for such an agency here. She had about 20 nannies on her books, most of whom were “sole-charge” nannies who had trained in child care, or were enrolled or registered nurses, she said. Miss Broughton hopes to work in closely with the new course for nannies at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, which began this year. She trained in Wellington at a childcare course in 1979, then came to Christchurch to work as a nanny. She then went overseas and worked in a nanny agency in London, as a nanny in various places in England, and in an international kindergarten in Italy. Miss Broughton said that her agency catered for everything from babysitting services to sole-charge nannying and home help such as cleaning. Some school pupils were on the books for baby-sitting services.

So far, jobs handled by the agency had been caring for children while their mothers went back to work, for holidays, parents going overseas, conferences, and family engagements such as weddings. Miss Broughton said she hoped to get out to work as a nanny herself while running the agency.
