Gilray wins bowls
Russell Gilray (St AlbansShirley) played with precision and accuracy to win his first Canterbury Working Men’s Club’s indoor bowling singles title at Hoon Hay last Sunday. Gilray beat Shane Cooper (New Brighton), 12-5. Both players took some time to settle down, but Gilray gradually moved clear and was never threatened towards the end. Cooper had every reason to remember the tournament fondly, however. He downed two of Canterbury’s top indoor bowlers, Leon McLennan and Alf Williamson, on the way to the final. In the semi-finals, Cooper beat Williamson, 7-4, and Gilray defeated Don Clark, 11-8.
