Auckland Anglicans to elect bishop
PA Auckland A Bishop of Auckland will be nominated at an electoral synod to be held in Auckland in July. The Archbishop of New Zealand and Bishop of Auckland, the Most Rev. Paul Reeves, will resign on September 30 to prepare for his role as Governor-Gen-eral.
Archbishop Reeves will take no part in the special synod. The senior bishop, the Bishop of Nelson, the Rt Rev. Peter Sutton, will preside at the synod. About 350 clergy and laity from the diocese will attend.
The synod, which will be-
gin on July 19 at St Mary’s in Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell, will sit until a majority in both houses of clergy and laity is reached. The nomination is submitted for consideration to the bishops and standing committees of other dioceses, and the person concerned is informed. He or she has the right to decline.
Any archbishop, bishop, or priest in the Anglican Communion is eligible, but in recent years electoral synods have not looked outside New Zealand.
An announcement is not likely for several weeks after the special synod.
