Warning to cook poultry properly
People eating turkey should make sure it is properly cooked, to prevent food poisoning, the Health Department in Christchurch has warned.
The Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Dr Mel Brieseman, gave the warning yesterday after six cases of salmonella were reported in Christchurch last week.
All six people who suffered food poisoning from the bacteria had eaten turkey, although it was not at a public place, he said.
Salmonella bacteria normally were found in animal products. Food poisoning from poultry could be avoided if poultry was cooked properly, he said. Defective plating on a copper tap was thought to be the cause of six other cases of food poisoning last week, said Dr Brieseman. The department was still investigating.
