Crane accident kills child
Contractors working at the Christchurch Polytechnic will be reminded of safety principles by the Polytechnic council after the death of a child on Friday afternoon. The child was
Leslie Peraniko Kelly, aged three.
The child died when a reinforcing cage fell from a crane being used by his father, Mr John Kelly. The boy’s older brother, Timothy Kelly was taken to Christchurch Hospital with a broken arm and leg. He was reported last evening to be in a comfortable condition.
The managing director of March Construction, Mr Buzz March, said that Mr Kelly was working the crane in Coventry Street about 1.30 p.m. when his wife and three children came to visit him.
Mrs Kelly stayed some distance from the crane with the baby, but the boys crawled under wires fencing off the site and ran over to see their father.
The 10m cage, which was being lowered into a piling casing, fell when a strop holding it slipped, said Mr March. It struck the boys a glancing blow.
