French plan may cause waves
PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said yesterday that it would be deplorable if France planned to escalate the policing of its New Caledonia territory into a big military presence. But he indicated he had some reservations that this was the intention behind official French announcements. He said it seemed that France had held intelligent discussions with the independence movement in New Caledonia and had persuaded them of the sincerity of its plan for independence, but it had calculated that the French settler might require “assurance” by having an increased military force.
