I.L.O. move ‘embarrassing’

PA Wellington The Government is embarrassed over its intention to reintroduce compulsory unionism, according to the Employers’ Federation president, Sir William Leuchars. He was commenting on the reaction of the chairman of Parliament’s Labour and Education Select Committee, Mr Fred Gerbic, to the complaint the federation has lodged with the Inter-

national Labour Organisation on the issue. Mr Gerbic said the complaint, based on the belief that the Union Membership Bill would deny workers freedom of association, was a National Party-Em-ployers’ Federation jack-up. “It is for the 1.L.0., not the Government, to judge the substance of our complaint,” said Sir William, who rejected the accusation of a jack-up.

The 1.L.0. would give the Government the opportunity to respond to the complaint. “I trust that its response will have more substance than comments made so far.” “As our letter of complaint shows, we believe that we have a valid complaint and we await the 1.L.0. decision with interest,” Sir William said.
