Migrants detained at length
By
MERILYN CHAMBERS
NZPA staff correspondent London More than 1000 people are imprisoned in England without appearing in court, according to a new report. The joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants and the Prison Reform Trust report says that thqy are
detained under powers given to the Home Office by the 1971 Immigration Act. It points out that in some cases immigration prisoners can be held in jail for long periods before deportation, once they are imprisoned as illegal overstayers. One case detailed concerns that of a Nigerian man, aged 39, who spent
almost a year in a London prison as a result of a decision by a public servant in the Home Office immigration department. The report argues that release on bail should be extended to those held under Immigration Act. and a bill is before the House of Lords to introduce this kind of safeguard.
