Defendant pleased he was caught
PA Tauranga A Papamoa man was jailed for three years and fined 53500 when he appeared in the District Court at Tauranga yesterday on three drug-related charges. Derek Cameron Lowden, aged 27, an orchard worker, appeared for a probation report and sentence before Judge Callander. He earlier pleaded guilty to selling cannabis to an undercover policeman on April 11 and April 17 at Mount Maunganui and possessing cannabis at Te Puke on April 17. Speaking from the dock, Lowden said that he was
grateful to the police for their humane treatment of him and for apprehending him. “I would have been looking over my shoulder for a very long time,” he said. “Thanks for releasing a burden from my shoulders. I do not think I could have taken a lifetime of worry.” The Judge said that he took into account Lowden’s genuine remorse for what he had done and had considered other similar cases when deciding on the sentence. He also ordered restitution of 51000 from the first sale of cannabis.
