Shipping news
More than 10,000 tonnes of coal a week is arriving by rail at Lyttelton from the West Coast in preparation for a big coal shipment later this month. The 30,000-tonne shipment will be carried by the Kinushima Marti, due at Lyttelton from Japan on May 22. The vessel is expected to load at port for several days. Mr David Jones, traffic manager for the Lyttelton Harbour Board, said that the shipment would be the first of the board’s 1985-6 financial year. Three further shipments, comprising a total of 54,000 tonnes of coal, were expected to be made in June. The final amount of coal to be sent to Japan and Korea for this year had not yet been determined, said Mr Jones. State Coal negotiators were now in South-East Asia discussing the contracts. Last year more than 325,000 tonnes of coal was exported from Lyttelton. South Korea bought 6000 tonnes and the rest of the coal went to Japan. ARRIVALS Binsnes (8 a.m.), 19,169, U.S.A. (Scales).
