Pakeha culture seen at fault
PA Hamilton The dominant pakeha culture is the problem in the education system rather than Maori children, the School Committee Federation conference has been told.
The Education Department’s northern regional official, Mr Wally Penetite, told about 30 delegates to the federation’s annual conference at Turangawaewae that attention should not focus on minorities but the system and the dominant culture.
“The structures that exist right now are created by the dominant culture, that’s pakeha society. “One of the clear messages that’s coming out of the Maori community today is to look at alternative ways of doing things, alternative ways of running meetings and getting people on to school committees,” he said. “There isn’t an element in the education system or society where the Maori isn’t saying there needs to be change.”
