Dealers can turn back odometers
NZPA London Consumer protection groups want the British Government to close a loophole that allows used car dealers to wind back a car’s mileage reading to zero.
Although it is illegal to turn back the odometer so that the mileage is less, the courts have taken the view that no-one would be misled into thinking a used car had not covered a single kilometre.
Dealers questioned by the West Midlands Consumer Services Department said they “zeroed” cars to protect themselves against previous owners who might have tampered with the mileage reading, “The Times” reported.
