Disaster adviser appointed
PA Wellington Mr John Fla veil, assistant director, operations, in the Ministry of Civil Defence, has been appointed regional disaster adviser to the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Co-operation.
Mr Flavell will be based in Fiji, from where he will advise countries of the South Pacific forum on counter disaster preparedness and training, and coordinating disaster management.
Since joining the Ministry in 1978, Mr Flavell has worked on several national emergencies including the Southland floods of 1978-79 and 1984, the Abbotsford landslip, the Thames floods of 1981 and 1985, and the Marlborough-Nelson floods of 1983.
