Grosvenor colt brings $35,000

PA Hamilton A colt from the first crop of the former outstanding Australian galloper, Grosvenor, fetched the top price of $35,000 at the opening session of Wrightson Bloodstock’s seventh annual weanling sale yesterday. The sole representative of his sire, a son of Sir Tristram which includes the Victoria Derby, Caulfield Guineas and V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes among his wins, the Grosvenor colt was naturally the centre of considerable attention. Offered on account of Glen Orchard Stud, Hinuera, he was bought by an Aucklander, Mr R. Finlayson. A particularly well-grown bay, the colt is the second foal of his dam Kehila, by Silver Dream from lolani, by Rocky Thumb. Kehila herself is a half-sister to a V.R.C. Newmarket Handicap winner, Elounda Bay, and this is also the family of the former brilliant sprinter, Pipe Dream. Second-top price yesterday was the $16,000 paid for a bay colt by Standaan from the Danseur Etoile mare, Laquiola. From the Maple Park Stud at Urenui and a first foal, the Standaan colt

was purchased by Mr G. Dunn, of Ohaupo. A Brisbane visitor, Mr K. Waterford, went to $14,000 to secure the chestnut filly by Parkdale from Neandra. by Neanderthal. The filly was offered for sale by Cambridge’s Glenroy Stud. An Auckland owner, Mr B. R. Smither, was the successful purchaser at $13,500 of a chestnut colt by Sea Anchor from Phillippa Jane, by Bahroona and Mr D. Tate, of Te Awamutu, went to $12,000 for the chestnut colt by The Expatriate from the Rangong mare, Fair Josefina. The highest passing was the $ll,OOO final bid for a bay colt by Pevero from Jezza, by Ruling, which was offered on account of E. M. Yule Farms of Te Awamutu. The top price of $35,000 was $7OOO short of the highest price at the same sale last year when a filly by Vice Regal from Jodine fetched $42,000. The 160 lots sold yesterday of 210 offered realised $400,625 at an average price of $2503. A further 40 odd weanlings will be sold today to be followed by a large catalogue of broodmares.
