Some of the 80 buses which transport an estimated 3000 workers to the Marsden Point Refinery expansion site each day. More than $1.5 million is paid each week in wages to the workforce on the site. Nearly $100 million has been spent on accommodation, transport and catering. Those working on the site range from boilermakers, riggers, and storemen to secretaries and nurses. Many jobs have also been created as a by-product of the project, including contracts for carpenters to build the houses for the families of construction workers, and the opening of shops to cater for the increased population. Marsden Refinery Constructors, the expansion project contractor, ran a special training programme for more than 1200 welders, pipefitters, riggers, scaffolders, and crane operators.
