Mr Bruce Hopkins
PA Auckland A mouth painter, Bruce Hopkins, a tetraplegic who brought inspiration to the disabled throughout New Zealand, has died in Auckland. He was 37.
Mr Hopkins, who died at the Otara Spinal Unit after a long illness, was one of the few New Zealand members of the Mouth and Foot Painters’ Association. His paintings were in keen demand.
He had been tipped to become a top rugby player until a swimming pool accident the day before his fourteenth birthday left him confined to a wheelchair.
Mr Hopkins helped to counsel new patients at the Auckland Hospital Boards' spinal unit.
In 1983 he won a seat on the Auckland Hospital Board, with a large majority, backed by the Wheelchair Action Committee.
