Insecticide for wheat farmers
PA Nelson An emergency shipment of insecticide for wheat farmers in drought-stricken Mid-Canterbury left Nelson yesterday after the temporary lifting of a union loadout ban. A load-out ban and picket has applied at the Mapua works of Fruitgrowers Chemical Company. Ltd, for about six weeks because of an industrial dispute. The Labourers’ Union agreed to lift the picket and ban temporarily so that 25 tonnes of granulated insecticide could be sent south. A spokesman for Bayer New Zealand Ltd, in Well-
ington, Mr Don Cruden, said that the insecticide was desperately needed by wheat farmers to counter a grass grub problem. The insecticide is laid with the autumn and winter sowings of wheat. “It is in the nation’s interest. Without the insecticide the wheat yields will be markedly reduced and New Zealand will have to import wheat next year,” he said. The 25 tonnes was a relief shipment only. The sowing season extended to midJune and more shipments would have to be sent to meet farmers’ needs.
