AUSTRALIA Record trading

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed at a record high on institutional support for selected industrial stocks, brokers said. The all ordinaries index closed off its day’s high of 880.3 points to finish at 878.2, a 3.2 point gain on the day and eclipsing the previous record of 875.1 set on April 30. The all industrials index posted its second consecutive record with a 3.7 point rise to 1225.2 points. The all resources marker rose 2.7 points to 606 and the gold index fell 2.1 points to 8999.3. Brokers said overseas factors provided little direction and they attributed market strength to institutional liquidity and a shortage of scrip. The national turnover was 44.60 M shares, compared with 32.04 M shares on Monday. Turnover was valued at $55.37M, with rises beating falls by five to four. ACI International topped the turnover list with 1.22 M shares traded for a 4c gain to 228. Analysts said the stock is a potential takeover target, with Adelaide Steamship a possible predator. News Corporation, which set the pace yesterday with a $l.lO rise to 870, was cut back on profit-taking to 840 in light trading.
