League field ‘spiked’

A rugby league match at Centennial Park, Spreydon was delayed last week-end while glass was removed from the playing field, said the chairman of the Canterbury Rugby League’s Board of Control, Mr lan Jenkins, yesterday. The matter was raised by the Sydenham club representative at this week’s meeting of delegates to the board as a warning to others to be wary in the months before and during the All Black tour of South Africa.

The glass was difficult to see because it was green, similar to that used in some wine bottles, Jenkins said. “While this action is possibly part of some protest against the Rugby Union tour to South Afica, the Canterbury Rugby league can only condemn those who were responsible for an extremely dangerous an stupid act,” he said. “It is possible people would be incapacitated or maimed for life.
