C.S.A. artists

A contemporary artist, lan Scott, is exhibiting six paintings from his 1984 series in an exhibition beginning tomorrow at the C.S.A. Gallery. Born in England in 1945 he came to New Zealand in 1952 and graduated with honours from Elam in 1967.

With several art awards behind him, Mr Scott has been widely represented in New Zealand, in group and one-man shows. Among these, the Grid Show and Seven Painters and the Eighties were notable contributions to New Zealand art.

A Wellington based artist,

Ray Thorburn, is holding a survey exhibition at the C.S.A. Gallery, from tomorrow.

At the age of 47. he has an awesome record, which lists 43 one-man shows and 12 awards, including a Frances Hogkins fellowship at Otago University in 1973 and Fullbright Scholarship, to the Ohio State University, in 1974.

Since Art School Ray Thorburn has been captivated by the magic of familiar elements combining to acquire new meaning. This was particularly so in his "Modular Series,” 196874.

From 1976-85 he consciously broke away from

the hard edged, high gloss, precise images of the Modular series and returned to the more intimate calligraphy of drawing. From 1979-1981 he studied for a doctorate degree in education at Ohio State University.

His “Calendar Series” which followed, combined his aesthetic concerns with his educational interests. Both exhibitions run until May 19.
