Driver fined $l000
PA Wellington The driver of a car involved in a double fatality was yesterday fined $lOOO and disqualified from driving for a year. Michael Denzil Stephens, aged 41, an engineer, of Upper Hutt, had been found guilty of dangerous driving causing death in the High Court at Wellington. The former Comptroller of Customs, Mr George Bathgate, and his wife, Irene, died in the accident on Wellington’s Aotea Quay
on May 12 last year. Mr Justice Eichelbaum said it would be a senseless act of retribution to send Stephens to prison. The accident and its consequences would be on Stephens’ conscience. His Honour said the bend where the accident happened “had its difficulties,” Stephens was driving too fast, the mechanical condition of his car played a part, and Stephens had been drinking, although his blood alcohol level was below the legal limit
