Antarctic trek completed
Three of the five men spending the winter at Cape Evans in Antarctica have completed a 12-day trek i which took them across Ross Island and up Mount I Erebus, Mount Terra Nova, and Mount Terror. I Dr Michael Stroud, Gareth Woods, and Roger , Mear are members of the “Footsteps of Scott” expedition which will send two i men (Mr Mear and Robert , Swan) to the South Pole ; next summer in a re- ( creation of the journey made by Captain Scott in ' 1911-12. ; The three set out from | Cape Evans on March 18 i and returned to their base ! last Friday. As well as 1 climbing the three peaks, the men travelled to Cape i
Crozier before crossing Windless Bight to Scott Base on their way back to Cape Evans. Dr Stroud suffered frostbite during the journey and Mr Wood blistered his feet, but otherwise the journey went well, according to a member of the support ship’s crew. About 70 people attended a lecture and slide evening held by the crew of the Southern Quest in Christchurch last week, and another is planned to be held at the Canterbury Museum this evening at 8 p.m. The crew are also willing to present their slides to any interested groups, including schools, while the ship is at Lyttelton. The ship will sail for Auckland on April 15.
