Aircrew union nominees
PA Auckland The Northern Drivers’ Union vice-president, Mr Tom Downey, has been nominated for the troubled post of secretary of the Airline Stewards and Hostesses’ Association. When nominations closed last evening, Mr Downey’s only competitor for the post was Ms Alison Warren, a former Airline Pilots’ Association researcher and
the cabin crew union’s acting secretary for the last two months. About 18 months ago Mr Terry Crossley resigned from the post after what he called a public smear campaign against him. Last June Mr John Wilson was elected secretary but resigned during the cabin crew strike which grounded Air New Zealand during Christmas. Mr Downey is campaign-
ing strongly for the post with references from the union solicitor, Mr John Haigh, and the Federation, of Labour’s president, Mr Jim Knox. The long-serving union president, Mr Peter Best, is not seeking re-election and Messrs Brian Pugh and Bruce Logan, both stewards, will contest the top post.
Results will be known at the end of this month.
