Hayes second seed

Rod Hayes, of Auckland, five times the Canterbury squash champion, will play his first tournament in Christchurch for two years over Easter week-end. Hayes is visiting his old hometown to contest the Sumner club’s Easter Open tournament, which will last from Friday until Mon-

day. In Monday’s final Hayes, the No. 2 seed, is scheduled to meet an old rival, Paul Viggers. They were team-mates for Canterbury in the 1983 inter-district event and for New Zealand in the world teams’ event the same year. Both are also keen to make

the New Zealand side for the world titles in Egypt later this year. Hayes last played in Christchurch when he won his fifth Canterbury title in June, 1983, beating Viggers in a four-game final. Other leading players in the men’s open draw are Craig Hibbert, Robbie Burnett, and two members of last year’s New Zealand junior team, Elliott Jones and Steven Wren. The women’s seedings are headed by Carolyn Viggers (1), Freda Walker (2), Mary Hunt (3) and Sandy Gowland (4), of Timaru. Hunt, now living in Australia, will be back in Christchurch for a brief visit. Among the absentees is the New Zealand under-19 girls champion, Justine. Marriott, who will be contesting the national under-23 tournament in Kaitaia.
