UPI threat
United Press International (UPI) has warned it may cut staff to curb financial losses after rejection by the Wire Service Guild of a wage freeze and other concessions, a guild official said yesterday. Mr Dan Carmichael, the secretarytreasurer of the guild, said the union had rejected an 18month freeze on salary levels, requested as part of a UPI plan, which also asks creditors to forgive debt in exchange for stock in the news agency. The company indicated it was contemplating further lay-offs, he said.
