The New Zealand dollar closed at JU50.4640/50 on the Wellington foreign-exchange market yesterday, up from its opening of $U50.4635/45. The Reserve Bank index finished at 62.4, up from its opening of 62.3. The Australian dollar sold down steadily to close at JU50.7005/10, down from $U50.7040/50. The U.S. dollar was at 3.0500/20 marks and at 250.15/ 30 yen in late afternoon trading — both below its openings of 3.0550/80, and 250.20/70. Dealers said the U.S. dollar had fluctuated all day on an otherwise quiet market, reaching a low of 3.0300/20 and a high of 250.60. They said people were worried about rumours circulating that Argentina and Brazil might not be able to service loan repayments to the United States. Sterling broke the SUSI.2S barrier to reach $U51.2522 but fell to JU51.2465/80 in late afternoon trading.
