Move to eastern suburbs
Angus Bulk Wholesale Meats has extended its services to the eastern suburbs with the opening yesterday of a new shop specialising in bulk sales at 86 Wainoni Road. This is the fourth Angus butchery in the Christchurch area. The one at 229 Colombo Street, Beckenham, was opened about three years ago, and the other two are situated at St Albans and the Hornby Mall. The new shop was formerly known as the Wainoni Butchery, a con-
ventional suburban butchershop owned by Mr Cedric Brown. Now, the emphasis is on bulk meat orders at considerably reduced prices. Deep freezers can now be found in more and more Christchurch homes, says the new manager of the Wainoni shop, Mr Warren Rawcliffe, and the desire to save by bulk buying of a large variety of foodstuffs has led traders in many fields, not least meat to specialise in freezer packs. Now, with the opening of the fourth shop, and Angus Bulk Wholesale Meats’ in-
creased buying power, the firm can pass on its savings i to the customers. ' Mr Rawcliffe quotes some ' of this week’s specials as an j example of how the home , bulk buyer can save: Stew- ! ing steak is selling at $3.99 , a kilogram (normal price, about $5.50 a kilo), sausages 99c a kilo ($2.50), fresh sides ( of mutton $6.99 each (norm- ] ally $lO to $11). The minimum purchase : for the specials is 2kg lots; ; for lesser amounts, the ’ prices are slightly higher 1 but still cheaper than the i average retailers. J
All meat and poultry cuts, and smallgoods will be cheaper to the bulk buyer, and Wainoni customers will probably become like their counterparts in Sydenham, St Albans and Hornby and keep a close eye on the specials. Mr Rawcliffe has moved to Wainoni from Angus Meats’ Beckenham branch where he had been head shopman for the past two years. Before that, he worked as head shopman for 13 years for a major retail chain in Brighton and the city.
