Oxford Show success despite rain later

Rain did not deter the last horse jumping section from finishing at the Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Show on Saturday. Rain started about 3.30 p.m. after fine and sunny weather in the morning. A strong wind about 10 a.m. had upset some of the horses in some sections, the judge of the park hacks and cobs section, Mr V. Digby, said.

Mr Digby said the park hack horses had been big and were generally well presented but the quality was only “medium." The cobs were “reasonable.”

The judge of the dairy goats, Mr J. Simpson, said the show condition and preparation of the animals had been good.

“The dairy goats are improving year by year — the champion doe, an Alpine Strontian Lara, is ideal to her breed type with a good mammary system.” The Nubian goats had good young stock coming through and were an encouragement to all breeders, said Mr Simpson. The president of the agricultural and pastoral association, Mr Kevin Wells, said the day had been most successful.

In spite of bad weather late in the day, gate takings were up on last year, he said. Industrial action by freezing workers cancelled the on-hooks section of the show, he said. The gift lamb section, for one lamb of any breed most suitable for the pre-cut lamb trade, is judged “on the hoof’ at the show and “on the hook” at N.C.F. Kaiapoi, Ltd. These lambs would be grazed in a mob and judged later, he said.

Entries were down slightly in some sections but this was a trend at most of this year’s A. and P. shows, said Mr Wells. Oxford is the last of the autumn shows.
