No disciplining for dog shooting

PA Palmerston North Two constables who shot three dogs at Turakina Beach, near Wanganui, last December will not be disciplined. The Wanganui police have received the findings of the inquiry into the shooting. Superintendent Bryan Dean said the decision was that the police had not acted in accordance with the Dog Control and Hydatids Act, 1982.

“It is clear the dogs were destroyed humanely and in the belief that it was being done pursuant to statutory authority,” he said.

The constables had also acted throughout the diffi-

cult situation with care and sensitivity. “I do not believe any criticism can be levelled at them, in spite of the conclusion that, in the final analysis, their actions were not legally justified,” he said. Mr Dean said the police often had to make instant judgments on points of law as part of their job, and sometimes mistakes were made.

Mr Graham Takarangi, lawyer for the dogs’ owners, Mary and Geny Austin, said he would discuss any future action with them. “Our complaint was fully justified, judging from the result of the inquiry,” he said.
