Family benefit
Sir, — The Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women will endorse our national executive’s press release objecting to any means-testing of the family benefit. The last time membership was canvassed on the benefit, the opinion of all delegates was strongly against varying payments according to income or number of children. There are inequalities in every sphere but what is the fairest means of redress? Because it comes in a woman’s name, she can use, the benefit as she sees fit. Would any change make much difference in the 1984 cost of $289.7 million? The National Council of Women of New Zealand represents more than 300,000 women so I hope the Government will once again listen to what is said by them. We are pleased to see our affiliates, W.E.L. and N.0.W., join us. — Yours, etc., NAN F ARRANT, President, Christchurch branch, N.C.W. March 29, 1985.
