TV jobs awarded

Two important Television New Zealand appointments have been announced.

Mr lan Richards will move from Wellington to Auckland to take up the position of television manager, Auckland, and the drama producer, Mr Stephen McElrea, has been appointed head of general and special interest programmes. Mr Richards was a successful television producer before taking up management positions in Hamilton, Christchurch, and Wellington.

From 1981 to 1983 he led the working party which investigated the possibility and then established Teletext in New Zealand, in association with Rehabilitation International.

“My move to Auckland as television manager comes at a time when private competitive television is on the horizon. The million-plus population in the region means that the largest area of competition will be in Auckland,” he said.

“The introduction of new technology and the establishment of a permanent TVNZ headquarters in Auckland, particularly with the major sporting events taking place in the northern region leading up to the 1990 Commonwealth Games, are priorites,” said Mr Richards.

Mr McElrea, aged 34, was educated at Otago Boys’ High School and Otago University. He taught at secondary school in Dunedin before joining television as

a production assistant in 1974. A period as a floor manager was followed by a position as first assistant on the Television One drama, “The Governor.” Mr McElrea has directed and produced “Close To Home,” and in 1982 was appointed producer of the highly, successful drama “Country G.P.’’He was recently awarded a Commonwealth Relations Trust bursary to study television production in the United Kingdom.

As the head of general and special interest programmes, Mr McElrea will be responsible for a range of productions such as “Kaleidoscope,” “Country Calendar,” “Koha,” “Science Express,” “Production Line,” and “Agreport.” He will be based in Wellington.
