Shots kill man, injure another, in Woolston

One member of the Devil’s Henchmen motorcycle gang is dead and another man, aged 23, is in hospital with gunshot wounds after an incident outside the gang’s headquarters in Ferry Road late last evening.

Members of the public near the gang’s house told the police about 10.10 p.m. that a shot had been fired at the corner of Ferry Road and Hargood Street. It appears a second shot was fired as the police were setting tip roadblocks on> either side of the house, at the corners of Tilford Street and Hargood Street.

The Ministry of Transport and an ambulance arrived at the scene soon afterwards. About 10.30 p.m. a Devil’s Henchmen gang member was taken to Christchurch Hospital with gunshot wounds to the arm.

Although details were sketchy late last evening, it • appears the shootings were not related to the threatened confrontation between the Black Power and Mongrel Mob gangs which followed Tuesday’s fatal stabbing at the United Service Hotel. The police late last evening were watching the Epitaph Riders’ gang house in Lincoln Road and stopping vehicles from leaving the property. Police had also

talked to Highway 61 gang members. The police chased a motor-cycle along Buckleys Road, Linwood, soon after the first shooting, and were also attempting to locate an Austin car that an onlooker saw leaving the scene. A team of detectives headed by Detective Inspector Jim Millar was investigating the shootings late last evening. Detective Inspector Millar was not available for comment.
