Palm Sunday peace rally

Brightly coloured banners, palm leaves, and balloons were carried into Cathedral Square yesterday afternoon as church and peace groups attended the Palm Sunday celebrations for peace rally. Hundreds of people attended the rally, organised by the Christchurch Council of Churches and the Peace Forum Working Group. One of the organisers, Mr Keven Clements, said it was hoped that the rally would become an annual event, similar to Australian Palm Sunday peace rallies. The general secretary of the National Council of Churches, Mrs Jocelyn

Armstrong, told the crowd that messages of support for New Zealand’s anti-nuclear stance had come from Suva, the Pacific Council of Churches, Japan, Australia, the United States, Britain, Geneva, the European Council of Churches, and from Asia.

“This means that there are thousands of people around the world who stand with us for peace,” she said. Two persons visiting New Zealand, one from Switzerland and the other from the United States, told the crowd of the strong support New Zealand was getting from churches and peace groups in their countries.
