All-Linwood final

The Linwood Bowling Club is set to put the seal on another successful season by winning the pre-Easter fours tournament. It will provide both the teams when the final is played, at Linwood, on the morning of Saturday, April 13. The two skips left after six rounds of post-section play at the week-end were John Saundercock and Ken Watson.

Saundercock and his team of Bernie Timms, Rod Kimber and Roger Glendinning are the defending champions. Watson’s team is Sonny Calder, Glen Miller and Roy Bailey. Both Linwood teams came through the semifinals at Beckenham yesterday without any worries. Saundercock thumped Ken Tough (Canterbury), 27-6, and Watson was just as

convincing in overpowering Arthur Stapleton (Shirley), 26-9.

Watson had a similarly big win in his only other game yesterday, against Roily Coe (Woolston W.M.C.) but Saundercock, whose team has gone unbeaten since losing its first two section matches, had some anxious moments in his two games yesterday. But there is no doubt that the game of the day was Saundercock’s clash with Warren Fitchett (South Brighton).

Fitchett was ahead 7-2 early but Saundercock recovered well and he was in front 12-8 with about 30 minutes remaining. Two twos, plus some fine bowling from his third, Peter Meier, enabled Fitchett to draw level on the bell end.

With each skip having a bowl to play Fitchett held two shots, but with his last

bowl he was a shade narrow and to his great dismay he caught the back of a Linwood bowl and turned it in for shot. This will be the third time in the last 10 years that two teams from the same club have contested a Christmas or pre-Easter fours final, and Linwood was the club on the two previous occasions as well. Yesterday’s results:— Fourth round. — W. Fitchett (South Brighton) 17, R. Skerten (Burwood) 8; J. Saundercock (Linwood) 21, E. Tomlinson (Redcliffs) 17; K. Tough (Canterbury) 18, R. Ward (Shirley) 12.

Quarter-finals. — Saundercock 13, Fitchett 12; Tough 22, B. Farndale (Fendalton) 7; A. Stapleton (Shirley) 12, B. Neal (Papanui) 8; K. Watson (Linwood) 26, R. Coe (Woolston W.M.C.) 8.

Semi-finals. — Saundercock 27, Tough 6; Watson 26, Stapleton 9.
