Four firms in Seabridge

Four companies will join forces next month to create one shipping agency under the existing name of Seabridge New Zealand, Ltd, the Press Association reports. The merger brings together the Auckland based Russell and Somers, Ltd (a subsidiary of N.Z. Forest Products), the privately-owned Russell and Somers (Wellington), Ltd, Christchurch-based A. R. Guthrey Travel and Shipping, Ltd, and Seabridge New Zealand, Ltd, which has offices in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The new agency will represent leading shipping services to Europe, Saudi Arabia, South-East Asia and East Asia, said the chairman of the new Seabridge board, Mr Graeme Alexander. From April 1, Seabridge will represent:

• The four Continental Lines in their A.N.Z.E.C.S. container trade to Europe, the Mediterranean and Jeddah.

• The Nedlloyd South-East Asian service to Bangkok, Surabaya, Jakarta, Singapore, Port Kelang and Penang as well as Mauritius and South and East Africa.

• In Auckland, starting in May the New Zealand Unit Express service linking New Zealand with the Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Mr Alexander, who is also a Forest Products associate director, said the aims of the new organisation would be two-fold.

"First we will be able to provide a much more extensive range of services to our customers. Importers and exporters will be able to discuss their requirements for trading in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Ail this expertise will be held by one company. "Second, we will be able to meet more fully the needs of the shipowner, whether he is operating modern liner vessels, container services or bulk charter tonnage.” Regional headquarters for the new company will be the existing Seabridge offices in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

National headquarters for Seabridge will be in Lampton
