Young athletes battle weather

PA Invercargill Brave performances in dreadful weather were posted by young athletes at the South Island secondary schools championsips in Invercargill on Saturday. Strong winds, frigid temperatures, rain and even hail buffeted and chilled the competitors, although a warm sun shone briefly. It was not a day for records, particularly on the track. Dougal Cockram (St Andrew’s College) proved a star performer in the sprints, winning the senior 100 m and 200 m as well as the relay for his school.

Cockram and an impressive intermediate sprinter, Scott Bowden (Shirley Boys’ High School), both stopped the clock in their 100 m races at 10.7 sec, although Cockram had a 5.22 per second tail wind and Bowden a 4.61 per second tail wind.

An Invercargill girl, Tracy Kennedy (Kingswell College), had a hat-trick of wins in the senior girls’ .3000 m 1500 m and 800 m.

The 15-year-old was in a class of her own in the longer events. After qualifying last for the 800 m final, she looked to be out of contention for a win with 250 m to go, but found another gear and finished strongly to win by a second. Ainsley Dwight (Christchurch Girls’ High School),, aged 12, showed the crowd she was an athlete with a bright future when she won the 200 m in 25.65ec.
