Upset in schools lifesaving contest

St Andrew’s College A caused an upset when it beat the defending champion, Christchurch Boys’ High School, to win the Sir John Hall Shield at the Canterbury inter-secondary school’s Royal Life-Saving Society awards at the Centennial Pool in Christchurch yesterday afternoon. Competition in the boys section was right and St Andrew’s won by only 6.25 points from Christchurch B.H.S. St Andrew’s showed its strength in the sport when its B team took third place with 626.25 points, and Waitaki Boys’ High School was fourth with 622 points. The winning team was Stephen Maginness (instructor), Shane Bradford, Richard Hurndell, Matthew Ellis and Stuart Restall. The Monica Thacker Shield in the girls’ section was retained by the exceptionally strong Christchurch Girls’ High School A team. It was more than 60 points ahead of the runner-up, and the team had the highest points total of the day. Christchurch G.H.S. A scored 695.5 points. Burnside High School A was second with 634.25, and Rangi- Ruru third with 601.25 points. The successful C.G.H.S. team was Debbie Allott (instructor), Tania Rahurahu, Kathryn Faoagali, Kim Smith and Deborah Small.
