Few records set
The usual flurry of fast & T i W ated wit h the inter-secondary ®fh°°i? championi9te S nil» DOt . n ]t teriali3e a t ol6 1985 finals at Queen Elizabeth u rark on Saturday evening ni^.P years 016 championships have become associated with last-minute attempts to achieve qualifying times for Olympic and Commonwealth Games teams. On Saturday, only two race records were set and one equalled in a rather low-key evening. Entries for the championships were down too. Richard Tapper (Southland Boys’ High School) broke the only individual record. The Other record was broken in the boys open 4 x 50m freestyle relay, and Linda Robinson (Papanui High School) equalled the girls under 15 years 200 m freestyle record.
Tapper took 0.5 s off the boys over 15 years 50m freestyle record set last year by Duncan Doig (Chhristchurch 8.H.5.). Tapper’s time on Saturday was 25.5 s and Doig, who finished second, was also inside the old time. He swam 25.975.
Tapper was expected to challenge the 100 m freestyle record, but his time of 56.45 s was a full two seconds outside the record.
Doig added the 200 m freestyle title in the boys over 15 years section, but he had to fight back a stern challenge by Hamish Smith (Kaikorai Valley High School).
The other record was broken by the Christchurch Boys’ High School relay team. It took 0.4 s off the previous mark, but the team had several anxious minutes before its win was confirmed. There was a protest against the Christchurch B.H.S. team. It was alleged that there was a break at one changeover. Southland 8.H.5., which set the record last year, could only manage second this year and was a second outside the time it recorded last year. Linda Robinson (Papanui H.S.) equalled the girls under 15 years 200 m freestyle record set four years ago by Lisa Chamberlain. Robinson’s time was 2min 16.915. Earlier in the evening Robinson had won the 100 m freestyle final.
Tania Rahurahu (Christchurch G.H.S.) had a successful evening, winning two titles. She won the open 400 m freestyle and the over 15 years 200 m freestyle with a time that was just over a second outside the meeting record. Sonya Timms (Rangiora H.S.), swam a smart 28.89 s to win the girls over 15 years 50m freestyle event. It was only 0.39 s outside the record. Robin Wiseley (St Thomas’ College) swam well in the boys under 15 years breaststroke events to win both races. Nina Lutton (Marian College) in the girls under 15 years section, and Shaun O’Brien (St Paul’s), in the boys over 15 years section, had similar success,
winning both breaststroke events in their age-groups. Prizes were awarded for the. schools gaining the most points. Christchurch Boys’ High School won the boys section with 36 points, well clear of Southland B.H.S. with 25. St Thomas’ was third with 21 points. Avonside G.H.S. was the top girls school with 32 points. Southland Girls’ High School was second with 21, and Christchurch G.H.S. third, with 15.
