Eddington gets double

Warren Eddington, of Marist, achieved a notable bowling double by taking most wickets (53) and having the best average (12.9) in the Canterbury inter-club cricket competitions this season.

Several others were poised to reach a half-century of wickets on the final day, but only Lindsay Forde (Old Collegians) reached his goal. The championship triumph of Marist and Eddington’s debut in first grade was mirrored in the bowling statistics. Jop Werle and Garry Hooper also, featured among the top six averages. In contrast, Marist’s most consistent batsman, Paul Bateman, was a modest eighteenth. Ross Calder, who appeared for both Lancaster Park teams, exceeded 800 runs on Saturday. He was 37 runs ahead of the joint runners-up, Dave Dempsey (Park A) and Craig Gibb (East-Shirley). But the distinction of heading the averages went to David Boyle, of Burnside-West, who had a comforable margin over the Old Boys team-mates, Anup Nathu and Peter Rattray. Because Marist batted throughout Saturday Hooper had no chance of taking the catch which would have brought him level with Brian Hastings’s record of 21 in a season. Paul Rutledge (St Albans) extended his new wicket-keeping dismissals record to 47,15 more than the previous standard. Leading averages were.—
